The Singing Butler is one of Jack Vettriano’s most popular and purchased pieces of artwork. Once again, a romantic stormy painting of a couple dancing on a wet beach, accompanied by the maid and–the singing butler! The original painting of the Singing Butler was sold in 2004 for a record-breaking $1.3 million at Scotland’s Sotheby’s. Jack Vettriano will often work endlessly for days in order to finish a painting.

Another very popular painting by Vettriano, who was born in Scotland, this is an artwork that leaves much to the imagination. Jack Vettriano needed to feel emotionally uncomfortable while doing his paintings, as you can feel from what you’ve seen on this page so far. Lots is left out, there’s always a feeling of edginess. To create this uncomfortable atmosphere, Vettriano created a dramatic feeling in his studio by playing requiems by Leonard Cohen while he painted. A girlfriend gave Vettriano some paints as a gift, and he soon discovered that he only wanted to paint. In these paintings, you will garner lots of feelings from Scotland, dreary days, sun trying to peek through, wet days and beaches, lots of gray.

Leonard Cohen performed the song “Dancing Me to the End of Love” in 1984. It became very popular as a love song, but was really a song about the Holocaust. This exemplifies the type of feeling and songs that Jack Vettriano listened to while he was doing his paintings.
Jack Vettriano was born in a Scottish mining town and fully intended to spend his whole life working underground in the mines there as an engineer. His girlfriend gave him some paints, and that was the start of his art career.
Vettriano’s art print, “The Singing Butler” outsells any other piece of artwork in the U.K. It is also a majorly popular piece of artwork internationally. Vettriano has studios both in Scotland and in England.
